Affordable new homes in Sussex
The council announced recently that they would authorise the start of a £4milliion building programme of affordable housing. It was revealed in the Worthing Herald that twenty-six new homes would be built in Elm Grove, Lancing. This only became possible after Adur district councillors stepped in to support the deal. The local council promised £195,000 towards the development costs.
The government has recently heaped pressure on local authorities and housing associations. They are expected to fill the shortage of affordable housing in this country, with the construction of 3 million new homes by 2020.
This is a contentious area, and there are many land sensitivities to consider. Nobody other than those with vested interests wants to see the countryside buried under concrete. The government has pledged to regenerate vacant property.This could be as much as 30 per cent for local authorities.
As far as new homes in west sussex is concerned, this is good news. The industry has been in the grip of a recession for the past eighteen months.
Jim Funnell, the cabinet minister in charge of regeneration remarked: “We have noticed a considerable slowing of new house construction in the region”.
“So, this is such good news to be part of a partnership which will help 26 families have a new home.”
The council funded the £4million scheme in partnership with the Homes and Communities Agency. Affordable housing developer Affinity Sutton, alongside the local council have contributed £2milliion to the project.
The expected completion date is around march 2010. All those people currently on the Adur Housing Register will be given priority treatment. One such family who will benefit from this will be the Daleys, currently living in rented accommodation. “We have always dreamed of owning our own home”, Mrs Joan Daley of Worthing was quoted as saying. We have been searching the local estate agents for any houses for sale in Sussex for a long time”.
The knock-on effect of satisfying the Daley family and others like them, is not having to route through newspapers any longer looking for advertisements saying property to let West Sussex!
