3m Masking Tapes
3M is the brand that made a name worldwide because of the quality and solutions it has provided to many industries and households. 3M masking tape, which was first introduced in 1925, is one of the many leading products of 3M. To mask means to cover or disguise, but in the case of this adhesive, it simply means to cover. It was designed as a useful tool for temporarily covering sections during a painting job. This original masking tape is supplied on a crepe backing with standard width sizes of 13 mm, 19 mm, 25 mm, 38 mm, 51 mm, and 76 mm. For more than 80 years, the company has continued to develop and improve the product through innovations and supporting products for its continued use.
Masking tapes were originally made for automobile painting jobs, specifically to protect one area when doing a two-tone paint job. This type of adhesive is a convenient tool for painting cars, walls, furniture and other products. With the help of 3M tapes, any painting job can have a professional finish.
Temperature is one factor that affects the performance of masking tapes. It is recommended to remove the adhesive when the surface temperature is just right, meaning, when it is neither too hot (350 degrees Fahrenheit or 177 degrees Centigrade) nor too cold (around 150 degrees Fahrenheit or 66 degrees Centigrade). In too hot temperatures, there are tendencies that some adhesive residue will be left, and too cold temperatures can cause easy tearing in masking tape. These factors were considered in the manufacturing of 3M masking tapes and were the reason why the company made several types of this adhesive to address the different conditions it can be subjected to.
In the company’s tradition of continued innovation and creation of unique solutions, the following types of 3M masking tapes were produced. It is coded and grouped according to its specialty.
- Code 2693, 231, and 232 are tapes made especially for critical paint lines and for clean up removal on high valued products. It has the best holding power.
- Code 2380, 2364 and 234 are tapes with reliable masking and clean removal on surfaces. These are designed for jobs such as functional coatings or paints, splicing, and on heavy-duty materials.
- Code 2307, 200 and 2214 – these are tapes for light duty bundling and stacking. It is made to perform easy with clean removal.
This type of adhesive has found many other uses besides “masking”. It could be used to seal packages, hold a drop cloth in place, splice poster board and other materials, labeling and bundling items together, and so much more. 3M masking tape is the leading and most reliable brand in the market today.
