Update Old Kitchen Cabinets For A Fresh, New Look

Metal coffee decor, pretty dinnerware and countertop accessories impart style to the kitchen, but if your cabinets are outdated, your kitchen will look lifeless and tired. Painting your cabinets is far simpler than refinishing and stripping them. Remove the cabinet hardware and doors and place the doors on a flat work surface. If you are going to replace the hardware with new hardware that has a different hole configuration, fill and sand the holes and lightly sand the doors. Wipe them down and apply latex primer; let dry and follow with latex paint, then follow the same procedure to paint the cabinet bases.

As far as colors are concerned, light and light neutrals will give your kitchen a brighter appearance. You can also try a shade of soothing taupe for an updated look. From lush greens and earthy browns to buttery yellows, colored cabinets are very en vogue. Browse through a kitchen shop to get ideas of trends in kitchen cabinet colors and bring the inspiration home.

Glass Alternatives.
You have undoubtedly noticed the stiff price tag on glass fronted cabinets in home stores. It is easy to switch out the wood panel fronts with glass in your present cabinets. Visit a glass retailer and look at the variety of alternatives, from textured or ribbed to plain glass. Measure the panels and purchase replacements the same dimensions. Working on a flat surface, remove the wood panels by gently tapping with a rubber mallet and chisel and replace the panels with the glass, using glazier’s points and glass putty to secure the glass fronts.

Get a Rich New Look with Wood Relief Carvings and Decorative Banding.
Look through local woodworking stores to find wood embellishments that can bestow depth and intricacy to your cabinet fronts. You’ll find wood carvings in styles and sizes to fit any taste and they can be stained or painted to match the door fronts.

Another alternative is thin decorative wooden banding for trimming cabinets of any type from exotic to oak. A wide choice of widths, styles and colors are available and they can be glued around the outline of doors and drawers to give them new detail and dimension while totally changing their character.
