What to See and Do in London
London, the capital of England is a fabulous city to visit; there is something for everyone to see and do. London has over 300 museums and more than 200 galleries. London has something for everyone and there are always events going on in the capital.
It’s easy to fly in to London from virtually anywhere, as there are four major international airports here. Once you have landed here there are several options of transportation to choose from. The best way to get around London is by using the extensive public transport system. There are hundreds of things to do in London and there are many fascinating places to visit. Before you even begin to visit them, make sure that all important documents – including details of your travel insurance – are stored in a safe place, preferably in the safe at your hotel. Here are a mere three of London’s most popular sights and attractions for your London visit.
Buckingham Palace – Buckingham Palace is one of England’s most famous palaces and is the official home of Queen Elizabeth II. The State Rooms are open to the public in summer. Since it’s acquisition for Queen Charlotte by King George III, the palace has a long and colourful history.
It was George IV who turned the house into a palace. It was Queen Victoria, in 1837, who became the first monarch to reside in Buckingham Palace. Guests are often entertained in the State Rooms during Royal ceremonial occasions. The rooms are lavishly decorated and have some of the finest French and English furniture in the world. The walls are adorned with paintings by Rubens, Rembrandt, Vermeer and Poussin. Annual exhibitions and regular tours also take place in the 29-acre gardens. This is definitely a must see when on holiday in London.
The British Museum – The British Museum is world renowned for its collection of objects exploring the history and culture of man. It is home to exhibits and objects numbering over seven million in total. Exhibits which range from prehistoric to modern are housed in the museum, which was founded in 1753. The Rosetta Stone, the Portland Vase and the Parthenon Sculptures are a few of the most notable items on display there.
There is a world-renowned collection of Egyptian mummies as well as a tomb-like room which is dedicated to the life of Negamun, a wealthy Egyptian. There are also dedicated areas in the museum for Medieval Europe, Chinese Art and Watches and Clocks. The glass-domed Great Court is the museum’s central hub. It is the largest covered public square in Europe and was designed by Lord Norman Foster. You would not see everything inside if you spent days trying.
The London Eye – The modern icon that is the London Eye - also called the Millennium Wheel - is a must see when visiting London. You will get a whole new perspective on this beautiful city by “boarding a flight”. This awesome streamlined riverside wheel is an impressive 135 metres tall. Through the glass pods you get a 360-degree view of the city. It’s possible on a clear day to see twenty-five miles all around.
As well as getting a birds-eye view of London’s sights, such as Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, and Canary Wharf, on a clear day you can see as far as Windsor Castle. It has a slow but steady pace and it takes around thirty minutes to complete one revolution. Expect to be standing a long time in queues for both tickets and boarding as this is a hugely popular attraction. If you want to save yourself some time you can book via the internet. Depending on your needs, you can find a variety of packages on offer. If your budget allows, beat the queues by buying a Fast Track ticket which lets you check in 15 minutes beforehand. If the fancy takes you it’s possible to have a glass of champagne or a personal London guide. This is the only way to get a panoramic view of this historic city.
After one visit to London you will most likely want to come back for more. You can easily get around this vast historic city by taxi cab if you have the budget!London has minicab operators which are both licensed and unlicensed. Similar to New York London is well known for its cabs which are black rather than yellow and are called Hackney Cabs. You should stick to using these licensed taxis rather than the often less reliable “minicabs”.
You can hire a car at all of London’s airport locations if you prefer this option to getting you around. You can easily find both self-drive and chauffeur-driven vehicles for hire at the airports.
When hiring a car, be sure to read the rental agreement fully so that you know exactly what you will be covered for in the event of an accident, particularly any excess charges which you may be liable for. Other specialist insurance products such as gap insurance, car warranties and breakdown insurance will generally be taken care of by the hire car company so you do not need to worry about these things. Make yourself aware of the details of breakdown cover and who to call if it happens, be sure that you have 24-hour cover in place! Be careful of agreeing to additional insurance products such as key or windscreen insurance as these will give you added peace of mind but will probably cost you more. Read carefully before signing anything! Sticking with a car hire company you know – such as Hertz, Budget or Avis – may often be your best bet.
Although hiring a car is a great way to get to your hotel or Bed and Breakfast, the public transport is excellent in the United Kingdom. London’s many major railway stations provide regular links to cities and towns all over Britain, including several trains every hour to Brighton, or “London-by-the-Sea” as it has often been called.
Whatever time of the year you choose to visit, you will find London an exciting and beautiful city. You will always find something exciting to do whether it is seeing the sights during the day or hitting all of the hot London clubs at night. As the famous Samuel Johnson quotation goes:
“When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life”.
