Charter Fishing For Spanish Mackerel
Mako, a 41 foot Steber Charter boat was our home for the next three days on an extended fishing charter to the Great Barrier reef. With a charter boat full of visitors from Victoria. With a forecast of 10 -15 knots for the next few days, everybody had big smiles all round.
First spot into the trip was to put a few lures out and see if any Spanish Mackerel around, some good reports from the week earlier were just too good to give it a miss. The lures were promptly belted by screaming Spanish mackerel and large runs.
The big diesels, must bring in the Mackerel and some excellent fishing action began. First pass resulted in a dual hookup, with one Spanish taking to the skies.
I was thinking billfish, but this poor fish was just trying to escape from the sharks. This Spanish mackerel was a goner, and all Steve managed was one shortened spanish mackerel. As lures were run for the second time, they’d just been set, 30 seconds and on again, another hookup, amazing stuff. Some thrilling fishing action followed with multiple hookups and fish landed over the next 45 minutes. A tally of three double hook ups also resulting in some astounded guests. Definately a great start to the trip, with 8 Spanish landed in 45 minutes, the scoreboard was looking healthy. The spanish (King) Mackerel were loving the lures and weighed around the 10 kilo mark.
Our favourite lures were the Halco lazer pro’s and Berkley frenzy lures, and were working overtime catching the fish. A great fishing tip is to run several lures with a deep diving lure in close down below the propwash just behind the boat. This gives good mixture and helps prevent tangles. The fishing and strikes was full on and we were struggling to get out our full set of trolling lures. Hard to take.
Trolling is one of the best way of targetting Spanish Mackerel and the guys from Reefari and one of their fishing charters will put you onto the fish.
