Prehistoric Flint

Ancient period of mining , without Wheel chocks
Mining wheel chocks were most likely not used at prehistoric or ancient Egyptian mines, but early people probably used rocks or wood to hold their carts in place. While wheel chocks are not as important in finding and mining the substance, they are imperative to the safety of the workers and the property surrounding the mines. Thousands of deaths have occurred at mines in the past, and wheel chocks are just one way of protecting miners. The history of mining is incredible, yet when you know about the safeguards in place now, you can have some appreciation for how difficult it was without wheel chocks.
Early Mining Methods without Wheel Chocks
Mining has been found to have occurred as many as 43,000 years ago in a flint mine called the “Lion Cave” in Swaziland in southern Africa, with more of the recent historical flint mines found in England in Grimes Graves that are 4,000-5,000 years old. The flint was probably mined for tools and weapons. Egyptian mines were pursued for malachite, a decorative stone used in pottery and sculpture, but as the mines were exhausted, at least as far as they were capable of digging, they sought other precious materials of gold, turquoise and copper. Ancient Greece developed a silver mine that helped to build and support the city of Athens, while the Romans mined plenty of gold, in their own territory and conquered lands of now England and Spain. The Roman empire developed large scale mining methods, using hydraulic systems built with aqueducts to bring water to the mining site. This was a system in which water was stored in large tanks, brought to the site on the aqueducts, and then released to wash away the overburden on top of the mine site. Then, “fire-setting” occurred to heat the rock that was then doused with water to crack open to the ore for excavation. Gold, silver, lead and tin were found and mined in England for the Roman empire. A you can see, no water or transportation trucks were needed here, but the mining wheel chocks could certainly be used, as specified by MSHA and OSHA now, on the loading and unloading of the carts. Up to the point of medieval European times, most of the mining done was through open pit mining, which is much more shallow depths than is seen today with the much better technology to dig. In the 14th century, the demand for weapons, armor and horseshoes increased greatly, as well as a silver shortage. Water power was used with more finesse as waterwheels were incorporated, but it wasn’t until the early 1600′s when black powder was used to blast apart rock to reveal the ore. Both open pit mining for stone and rock, in addition to deep pit underground mining for coal and precious metals occur today. These two conditions will almost always create inclined surfaces for a truck to sit upon, thus, mining wheel chocks are a new part of the history of mining.
