Indonesian Aid Efforts Hindered By Mount Merapi Erupting Again
Another eruption has occurred in Mount Merapi, following the first was set off by the earthquake in Indonesia. The first Mount Merapi eruption killed over 30 people. The area has been decimated by the effects of the Indonesia earthquake. The tsunami and earthquake resulted in practically a thousand dead and missing. The area is battered, and filled with displaced people. Aid is starting to trickle in, but delivering it is difficult.
Merapi erupts a second time
On Java Island, an additional eruption originated from the Mount Merapi volcano. The previous eruption occurred just two days previous, according to the BBC. The first eruption killed a total of 32 people. These people were either suffocated from gases or died from burns. Outside of Sidorejo is a communal grave south of the volcano where 20 of those were buried. Among the deceased was Maridjan, a local elder who was considered the spiritual guardian of the volcano. Following the second eruption, aid workers and victims within the area have started to show respiratory symptoms as a result of exposure, and aid workers are still looking for possible victims of the first blast.
Slowly seeing aid come in
Relief efforts and aid haven’t been coming quickly. It’s been a slow process. There hasn’t been much aid coming in for victims of the Indonesia earthquake. This is since the terrain is so terrible along with the flooding happening. The journey into the hardest hit areas, like the Pagai Islands, takes nearly a day in the best conditions, as outlined by CNN. The Indonesian tsunami battered the islands of Sumatra and Java, and also the vulnerable outlying islands have been the hardest hit areas of all. More than of 400 people have been killed as a result of the earthquake and tsunami, and more than 300 are missing. Thousands are homeless.
UN and nonprofits send aid
The United Nations has sent in relief workers and aid. Nonprofits like SurfAid has sent in some too. The aftermath of the volcanic eruptions, earthquake and tsunami will take a while to mend.
