Insect Male Populations Hit With Pesticides
Focusing on the singular idea of eliminating insects by destroying a certain portion of the insects’ male population, the US Department of Agriculture engages in a constant titanic battle verses a variety of pests and insects that plague mankind, plant life, and animals. In their year end report, the federal government’s Agriculture Department noted that one of the effective methods for achieving this insect eradication was to attract that targeted males with chemical attractants. To get a closer look on pest Control Australia visit this site.
The potency of this new strategy was highlighted by the tests in which agency entomologists were able to eradicate oriental fruit flies in a small island setting near the US territory of Guam. The main reason the experiment was conducted was to try and determine what sort of effects the chemicals would have on the insects. Methyl eugenol, a laboratory devised chemical compound, has proven to be nearly irresistible for the male members of the fruit fly families, and it has repeatedly been shown to lure them away from nearby crops. The test further showed, not surprisingly, that with the male members of the species removed the rest of the population slowly died out.
The Department of Agriculture has said that these recent experiments conducted to find what chemicals female insects use to attract the male members of their species has shown several promising new chemicals that could be used. Other species in which attractants have been developed include houseflies, lesser peach borers and cabbage loppers. After finding out about the attractants, scientists could then continue on with their work on chemo-sterilants, which make the males unable to reproduce.
Scientists continue to look at the attractants so that they can copy the compounds to be sold for a less expensive price. The department is pleased with the potential shown by the fledgling chemo-sterilization program and hope they will be a long-term solution for insect eradication. Some of the original ideas for insect eradication came from efforts that were previously undertaken to get rid of housefly, boll weevil, and several other pest populations. This site teaches you about organic pest control services.
In the southwest an effort to eliminate screwworm flies, which plague livestock there, involves a male insect sterilization method utilizing gamma radiation. This method has been used before in the southwest, with much success. For the eradication of screwworms sterile male flies are released that were produced in a lab, they then mate with the local populace. This strategy works because female screwworm flies are only able to mate once in their life, so if they attempt to do so with a sterile fly they will never reproduce.
Agricultural insects such as houseflies, cotton pests and boll weevils could be a thing of the past, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. There are substances taken from cotton plants that will repel weevils and male weevils have been used to extract substances that will be used to attract them. Department of Agriculture reports indicate that the government has had to insure millions of dollars of crops in the past with federal crop insurance, a number they hope to reduce. The agency said that several hundred thousand crops spanning millions of acres in the country were federally insured to protect against natural disasters.
