Clean Out The Garage And Clean Out The Consumer Soul
These days we all seem like we’ve just collected far too much stuff and it’s crowding our lives in a way that we might not like. We act like a bunch of little worker bees flying about bringing things back to the hive that we thought we needed but discovered we only wanted. Finding out that letting go of things we thought we needed through garage sales are like chicken soup for the consumer soul, to be honest.
For the most part, if people were honest they’d admit that most men in the family are the biggest offenders of amassing junk that can better be put to use by selling it off at a garage sale. Even though they once thought they were going to play that black electric guitar gathering dust in the basement the truth is they’re not, which makes it a good candidate for sale even if they cringe at the thought.
This is why many experts recommend that holding an occasional garage sale can be like chicken soup for the consumer soul. It’s a way of flushing out a bunch of unneeded stuff and freeing up a lot of space for other things that are probably much more needed and no less wanted. And making hubby stand over in the corner and help when it comes to selling off all that stuff might be enjoyable, too.
After all, it’s probably his fault that every one of the home storage shelves in the basement, the garage and in more than a few of the bedrooms that the kids used to live in prior to moving off to college are now stacked with more stuff than might be found in the fabled cave of the 40 thieves of Ali Baba fame. Making him do penance by cleaning out that cave can be a good thing for most any wife.
Keep in mind that it isn’t mandatory that every single thing of any kind of value be disposed of at a garage sale. For example, selling off the only Cuisinart food processor in the house — before getting another food processor — is a surefire way of ensuring that all those healthy meals that were being eaten soon fall by the wayside. Either get a new one beforehand or don’t sell the old one off.
In truth, there are probably thousands of things around the home that belong at a garage sale but we always seem to find reasons to never let them go. Maybe it’s a tennis racket or a bowling ball that we once thought we were going to use when we took up the sport or it might be something else. Don’t be sentimental about those kinds of things when some money can be made from them.
This isn’t to say that things of great sentimental value should be cast aside like a used up tennis ball, but it does mean that inventing reasons for keeping stuff laying around the house — when there are plenty of people out there just dying to get that stuff for whatever reason — isn’t the greatest way to go, either. So, holding an occasional garage sale can be lucrative and therapeutic, right?
