Tibetan Mastiff Popularity Raising Questions Of Animal Well Being
In some areas of China, the rise in popularity of the Tibetan Mastiff dog is both an economic boom and animal welfare concern. The popularity of the Tibetan Mastiff
Ethnic Tibetans have long considered Tibetan Mastiff dogs holy. Having a Tibetan Mastiff is considered a sign of security. The dog breed is huge, with some animals easily approaching 180 pounds. Finding Tibetan Mastiff purebreds is difficult, since the breed is so rare. A purebred Tibetan Mastiff is typically at risk of being “poached” by breeders.
Expense of a Tibetan Mastiff
The Communist Party of China used to bad the ownership of dogs as pets. The animals are considered “bourgeois” and a status symbol. Though dog ownership isn’t really banned anymore, it does take at least $ 100 and a number of months to get them licensed and registered. Before the owner can register or keep a dog, it must be approved both by the neighborhood and local police. The yearly registration renewal must include passport photos, registration documents, even proof of home ownership. In short, owning a dog in China is an expensive and difficult proposition on top of the high cost.
Mastiffs as a status symbol?
Though the Tibetan Mastiff is typically regarded as a very kind and friendly animal, many of the wealthy owners and breeders that deal in Tibetan Mastiffs view them as more than pets. The couple that purchased the dog known as Yangtze River Number Two keeps their $ 600,000 dog in a cage. In Beijing, the International Center for Veterinary Services calls the obsession “dangerous”. It is noted that numerous of these so-called “pets” are put on display more than treated like pets. Breeders and owners dispute this claim, pointing out that keeping a Tibetan Mastiff takes extensive care.
