Pick Up Papyrus On Your Sharm El Sheikh Holidays
Papyrus is one of the most popular souvenirs for those on Sharm el Sheikh holidays. This material is sold with Ancient Egypt images and symbology painted on them; a traditional yet inexpensive purchase for visitors. Papyrus is a wetland sedge that was once common in the Nile Delta. Growing from 5 to 9 feet tall, it produced a thick paper like material from its pith which was versatile and used by the Ancient Egyptians to make paper, mattresses, boats, mats, baskets ropes and sandals.
The plant, Cyperus Papyrus has since become extinct in Egypt but plans are under way to reintroduce it. It was first used way back in the time of the First Dynasty and was used extensively throughout the whole Mediterranean region. Unfortunately, the Ancient Egyptians left no record of the art of making paper from papyrus and it wasn’t until 1965, that an Egyptian scientist rediscovered the lost art. The scientist, Dr. Hassan Ragab, reintroduced the plant back to Egypt from the Sudan and has set up a plantation on Jacob Island, near Cairo. This discovery has the lead the way in paper production, and Dr Ragab is now an expert in the industry.
On sale in every bazaar and market in Egypt are papyrus paintings and scrolls. The paintings and pictures often reveal different scenes or artwork discovered inside the tombs in the Valley of the Kings.
Visitors on Egypt holidays will most often buy the artworks of King Tutankhamun’s beautiful death mask. Also popular is to have a papyrus scroll with a name painted on in Egyptian hieroglyphs. Keep in mind that the cheapest papyrus are the ones with the frayed edges and often have screen-printed scenes on them. These can generally be bought for 3 Egyptian pounds (about £1). An average sized papyrus with acceptable artwork can be bought for 15 -20 Egyptian pounds, dependant on how good your bartering skills are!
If you’re really interested in the production of papyrus, you can include a trip to the papyrus museum on your Egypt holidays. If you’re buying papyrus, be sure to confirm you have the genuine article. Make sure you look for a government-approved stamp of authenticity.
