Papago Indian

When do you use had, has, and have???? (SAT Writing)?
alright so there are 2 questions that ask to find the error and i just dont understand when you should and should not use had, has, and have!? the parentheses are the underlined portions that can be changed.
After Gertrude Ederle (had swam) the English Channel, she (was celebrated as) the first woman ever (to accomplish) (the feat). (No error)
The Papago Indians of southern Arizona take justifiable (pride in) (their) traditional craft of basket-weaving, an art that (has brought) them fame (throughout) the Southwest. (No error)
The first one: HAD SWAM is incorrect, because it’s in the past perfect tense, when it should be in past simple. The correct way is “After Gertrude swam the English Channel.”
One common way you see “had” constructions is when you’re talking about two different events in the past, and you’re distinguishing when something happened.
“I had just stepped outside when the dog bit me.”
“He had been working there for five years before he finally got promoted.”
ALSO, when you’re talking about something that went on for a period of time in the past, but it’s no longer going on.
“She had lived in Florida all her life.”
A common way to see “HAS/HAVE” is what’s called the present perfect. That’s when you’re talking about an event that started in the past, and is still going on. Examples:
“I have lived in California for 20 years.”
“I have been to France two times.”
“We have not seen that movie.”
“She has been teaching for 6 years.”
“The chicken has been roasting for 20 minutes.”
