Traditional Brick Tea
Technology has brought the modern world numerous forms of packaging and shipping. Sealed plastic or aluminum bags, custom boxes, foam containers, and paper packaging can be found in almost every product today, typically customized with the brand’s logo. Perhaps one of the first methods of packaging and transport, at least for the food industry, is tea pressed into compact bricks.
The main reasons for compressing tea into bricks include controlling moisture, convenience for transport, and potentially even a type of branding association. Tea that has retained too much moisture is vulnerable to rot, mold, and fungus growth. With too little moisture, the tea becomes brittle and does not maintain the compact shape. The brick shape can include the traditional rectangular shape, cubes, or even circular like a disc, depending on the desired shape and moisture control.
Because the processed, bricked tea is still malleable, they are often found with ornate markings pressed into the tea itself. These often ornate impressions of both images and writing serve as both decoration and to identify the producer, variety, or grade of tea. In this way, inferior tea cannot be repackaged in order to disguise or misrepresent its origin and type. Ingeniously, the tea itself serves as both its own packaging and branding apparatus.
Perhaps the most important advantage of forming tea into bricks was the ease of transportation. Tea had to travel long distances from the mountains in the south of China up to Mongolia and Russia, as well as to the coast and on ship. So preservation techniques were very important. Additionally, in a time when currencies were not well established or accepted, brick tea lended itself well to barter.
Nowadays, with air transport, great packaging, and effective preservation techniques, brick teas are viewed more as a historical relic. But, due to the unique storage technique, a unique flavor is imparted to these teas. And in a field, much like wine, where subtle flavors and differences are appreciated, this aspect is not lost on tea experts and coinnosseurs. So a small faction of the tea community uses modern versions of brick tea today. Due to its potency, it is also well-suited for use in cooking and baking, imparting a recognizable tea flavor into the recipe.
To use brick tea, simply break or cut a small piece of the brick and steep it as you would a black or pu-erh tea. Unlike black tea, however, brick tea can typically be steeped multiple times. The most common type of brick tea is pu-erh, found in small bricks and wrapped in paper. This marriage of ancient tradition and modern technology allows tea bricks to be enjoyed thousands of years after their introduction.
To brew the best quality loose leaf tea, you’ll need a cast iron teapot, Yixing teapot, or kyusu.
