Did Systema come from Chinese internal arts?
I’m very interested in the style, but I’m skeptical about its origins. The Systema websites claim the art dates back to the 10th century and was used by the Cossack warriors, and monks in russian eastern orthodox monastaries used to train in it (kind of like the shaolin monks).
For what I gather it was most likely developed around the 1950′s and looks like a novel, outside the box approach to internal kung-fu styles.
It is unlikely that it was used by the Russian special forces like they claim, because internal styles take too long to learn. The military only has brief training in hand-to-hand fighting (since it’s rarely used) and focuses mainly on using firearm.
I’m very interested in the style with its emphasis on self-discovery and experimentation, but I wish they won’t make up things about its origin.
All you have to do is look at Cossack folk dancing to see it’s origins. Systema was developed from traditional methods, especially those taught among the Cossacks from back when Mongolian invaders were pushing into the Russian territories.
Systema as we know it stems from the training given to Stalin’s private guard, known as Stalin’s Eagles. It was further developed by the Soviets and is commonly used to train Spetsnaz. It’s not an internal style in the slightest, not the least bit esoteric, and is actually quite accessible. If you can dance, you can learn Systema. The training for Spetsnaz soldiers is nothing like the training for US Special Forces. The communists had their own ways 
There is absolutely no evidence of Systema’s origins being made up. I submit Cossack dancing:
If you look at many cultures, you will see their martial arts taught through dance. Like storytelling, poetry, and music, dance was an effective medium to teach warrior skills in a way that could be remembered.
