Engagement Rings: A Promise of Commitment
What is the purpose of buying an engagement ring? In numerous cultures around the world, they are a symbol of the promise to marry. Engagement rings come in all shapes and sizes, but the meaning stays the same. For example, an engagement ring can run from a large emerald that is worth millions of dollars to the modest silver band costing only a few dollars. No matter how much the cost or how fancy the design, it is the symbolism of the ring which remains all important. In summary, engagement rings are a significant symbol not only for the newly-engaged couple, but alsofor the other individuals in their lives who look at them.
Engagement rings are generally a gift to the woman he wishes to marry by a man as the sign of his commitment to her. If the woman is also prepared to commit to the union, she then receives the engagement ring from the man. The presentation of the engagement ring usually takes place after the couple has gotten to know one another through dating over a significant time period. The common period before presenting a ring is roughly a year although many people would present a ring after various amounts of time. There are also no set rules about how and when the man should deliver the engagement ring to his future wife. Many men opt to do this during a quiet moment, while others want to share the moment with a crowd.
Engagement Rings Mean Love And Marriage
Virtually all engagement rings hold one or more diamonds, a long-lasting precious stone. The primary reason that diamonds are so long-lasting is that they are one of the strongest substances on our planet. This is the primary reason why diamonds have been elevated to the position of symbol of enduring love. Really, many of these diamonds are handed on to other generations, having lasted beyond the lifetime of the bride. Therefore, it’s easy to see why diamonds have become the stone of choice for engagement rings for many individuals.
An engagement ring should be displayed on the woman’s left hand, establishing to her family and friends the important commitment the couple has just made. In addition, all of the members of a society that acknowledges these rings as a mark of commitment will at once see that this woman is intended to be married. A high number of couples indeed marry at the close of their engagement, although a small number of couples do decide to not go through with the marriage ceremony. After the marriage takes place, the new bride continues to wear her engagement ring along with the wedding ring she received during the ceremony. And as a symbol that the commitment is final and enduring, the wedding ring should be worn on the left hand.
