Japanese Plate with 2 marks?
I have a Kutani plate that is over 10 inches in diameter. The strange thing is this plate has 2 marking on it. One says Kutani and the other says Shozan, I think. Is this common? I think this dates to the late meiji, around 1910, since that is the correlating Shozan marks date. I am not really sure. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
The marks for Kutani and Shozan do sometimes appear together on Japanese ceramics. In fact, there was a Kutani artist called ‘Kutani Shozan’ active until 1883, so well into the Meiji period. There was also a ‘Shozan Kutani China Company’ in Japan, although I am not sure if they are still active.
