In India, women wear bracelets to identify their marital status.
Bracelets in the 1700s and 1800s
Chain bracelets appeared in the 18th century, with Paris becoming the centre of jewellery trends. Gold was the preferred material and opaque gems such as coral were popular. The practice of wearing many bracelets on one wrist developed at this time. There also was a renaissance of elaborate Byzantine styles. Also making an appearance was jewellery crafted from either fine gold or silver mesh. In the 19th century, the Victorian inspiration led to gems designed with sentimental value. Lockets as well as personalised jewellery were considered to be popular.
