What are some of the less touristy things to do in oahu?
i have three kids, ages 4, 9 and 16. what are some family friendly things to do that aren’t touristy–you know, like waikiki and hilo hattie and luaus? thx! 
Locals do . . .
go to the beach at Kailua beach. Older kids get sand sliders. Kimmers I guess they call them today.
Locals may take their kids to chucky cheese.
You can go to the waterfalls, but that can be risky if you have never been there. I think Sacred falls has a tour. In my day, you had to get there by yourself.
Stairway to heaven . . . I don’t know if it is open.
Drive up tantalus . . .
See Pearl Harbor . . .
See Punchbowl
Do a picnic day cruise on a boat, but that may be dangerous for the 4 year old
Glass bottom boat Tour
Hanauma Bay it is touristy, but the fish come right up to you.
Sea Life Park . . .
If you can meet someone somehow, maybe they will take you out to the Mokuluas. Maybe some of the Canoe paddlers from Lanikai might be around their canoes. You can talk them into paddling out to the Mokuluas. I used to take my crews all the time out to the Mokuluas and hike around the Island. The islands are off Lanikai/Kailua.
Go Sailing
Go Fishing All you need is fresh shrimp, poles, lines, hooks.
Go up Diamond Head crater stairs
Do the around the island trip with a rental car. Just don’t leave anything to be stolen in the car. Lock the car.
Right now, it might be interesting for the older ones to watch the big waves. It may be breaking. It is winter season.
Shopping malls outside of Honolulu.
Stay in a cottage in a family friendly community. I guess Kailua. I am originally from Kailua. It is somewhat of a Haole neighborhood.
You can stay all the way out at Turtle Bay. The north shore is an experience by itself. I had some friends who I met in California when I worked at the hilton in San Diego. They used to stay out at the Turtle Bay. Real friendly open jewish family. They made friends with some of the locals out at the Kahuku. They were invited to family luaus. It does not happen to everyone. They used to stay for a month at the hilton, and the hotel manager allowed me to hang out with them.
