Explore Ancient Cat Worship With All Inclusive Holidays In Egypt
Even though cat worship (the Cult of Bast) was banned in 390AD, tourists on all inclusive holidays in Egypt still notice its presence. If you take a look into Egypt’s ancient history, you’ll see why Egyptians worshipped felines. Some 4000-6000 years ago, Egyptian farmers were experiencing problems with rodents, which broke into their stores and ate their grain. An ancestor of today’s house cat – the African wildcat – was known to be a great mouser, so was welcomed by the farmers. The gratitude of the Egyptians evolved over the years into veneration and the first documented example of cat worship occurred 4950 years ago.
By 975BC, cats were considered as Gods, known as ‘Bast’ or ‘Bastet’. Bast was a Goddess known for her nurturing nature and was considered as a positive force for propsperity. Her opposite was her twin sister, Sekhmet, who was depicted as a woman with the head of a lioness. Worshippers believed Sekhmet to represent the darker, destructive side of Bast. Gods were believed to take the form of cats. Ancient Egyptians believed they were satisfying the Gods by satisfying the cats.
Tourists who are enjoying all inclusive holidays in Egypt can visit the ruins of temples of worship, which were constructed during the time of cat worship, which spanned just over a thousand years. The feast day of Bast was enjoyed by 700,000 ancient Egyptians on October 31st every year, who descended upon the temple to dance and eat in celebration of the Goddess. Inside the temple were many cats, all carried around in baskets and fed the choicest food. Anyone who harmed a cat was sentenced to death. Funerals for cats were spectacular – the owners would shave their eyebrows off in respect.
Cat lovers who are enjoying holidays in Egypt can visit a recent discovery in Alexandria – a temple dedicated to the cat Goddess, Bast. Two thousand years ago, this temple was built by Queen Berenike II and upon discovery, had 600 bronze cat statues inside it.
