A necessary component of this new relationship is the support of your spouse in regard to open dialogue and your new position in the family. This will help you avoid any problems or misunderstandings that may otherwise be overlooked without this type of open discussion forum.
You must remember that being a step parent will be a completely different scenario for you, even if you have been a parent before. If it becomes too overwhelming, support groups are available for those in need. You can also find groups online where you can meet other people dealing with the same issues. Working together with your new husband or wife, you should be able to work out most issues that can be overcome. Being a step parent may be tricky at first, but with the help of your local support group, your role can feel natural. Stepparents may find themselves needing to further their education about the role before they become completely competent.
Although it would be nice to have a great relationship with the step kids, never forget that the reason you are in this relationship is because of your new spouse. Your best bet as the new step parent is to play a secondary role, especially until the children have gotten used to you. Whether your step children are young or old, they may eventually grow to like you even more and inevitably place you into a position of a parent. Most of the time, it is best to do whatever you can to help your partner in basic decisions related to family matters. Remember that it’s not just you, but also your step children and your new partner who also have to adjust to the new situation.

If you have raised your own children, you may find it very difficult raising someone else’s as the step parent. Understand that this relationship with your step children will be a work in progress from the very day you begin. By letting the step children understand that you are there for them no matter what they need, your relationship with them will benefit greatly.
