Using The Internet To Teach Your Kids History And Current Events
Because of all the school budget cuts, in many cases it’s the parents’ responsibility to ensure their kids have well-rounded educations. Fortunately, the online world is filled with educational materials — if you’re savvy about searching for them. And because little ones are so computer savvy, accessing the Web for learning is natural for them. I watched my four-year-old nephew navigate YouTube looking for NASA launch videos and footage of tornadoes, so older kids should have no problem.
You can often find learning opportunities in unusual places, for example, in the world of vintage art. Digitized antique advertising, postcards, greeting cards, posters and other ephemera contain historical information that’s quite revealing. The following vintage images are just a handful of the types you can use for teaching:
Free Vintage Travel Art
Children can learn a lot about the world from vintage aviation posters. These views of travel from days gone by instruct not only about the destinations themselves, but also about how people used to view them.
Old Sailing Ships Paintings and Photos
There’s plenty of interesting information to be found if kids study sailing ships. From pirate and slave ships, to Orient clippers and multi-masted, ocean-going vessels, there are interesting details bound to catch any child’s imagination.
Vintage Postcards of Historical Figures
There was a remarkable selection of postcards printed that honored American presidents, statesmen and even heroines. As a matter of fact, these used to be very popular. From free pictures of George Washington to cards with pictures of John Adams and Betsy Ross to fictional heroes such as Uncle Sam, the online world is filled with these vintage pictorial references. Many tell stories along with the pictures, making them bite-sized history lessons.
Colonel Stoopnagle’s Spoonerisms
Spoonerisms for children originated in the early- to mid-Twentieth Century, brought forth by Reverend W.A. Spooner and made famous by radio comedian F. Chase Taylor, who perfromed under the name of Colonel Lemuel Q. Stoopnagle. These unusual versions of traditional fairy tales swap letters or sounds in unique ways. Some supposed authentic spoonerisms include “fighting a liar” for “lighting a fire” and “cattle ships and bruisers” for “battleships and cruisers”. In addition to being entertaining, these funky mash-ups also teach children to play with words.
Victorian Fashion Illustrations
Fashion isn’t necessarily frivolous or only for children who want to go on to become fashion designers, if it reveals a piece of history. Looking at Victorian era fashions how different life was almost two centuries ago. With any luck, they’ll understand just how good they have it now!
And Don’t Forget Current Events!
There are also plenty of current subjects that can be studied. You just have to make sure the materials, or at least your presentation of them, is impartial. As an example, many parents don’t agree with the president’s policies. But that doesn’t mean they can’t use Barack Obama clip art, Barack Obama photos or even Barack and Michelle Obama paper dolls to create interactive social study modules. As a matter of fact, I know personally of a homeschooling mom who used all three to create a tote board for her children during the presidential election. Her own political views weren’t an issue, she just wanted to make sure her kids understood the election process. Due to her neutral presentation, her children are now better equipped to make their own decisions when it comes to politics.
Remember, kids absorb the attitudes around them, so you want to make sure they get balanced information. Keeping an emphasis on fairness will bear sweeter fruit for them later on in their lives. You never know, one of the children you’re teaching could be the president some day!
