Easter Island’s remote location, combined with is cultural heritage, creates a unique destination for any curious traveler. The legendary Moai statues and the cult surrounding the island’s inhabitants give this place a very specific character. The early Polynesians, isolated from the rest of the world, practiced their traditions for centuries and even well after they were discovered by Europeans in the 18th century.

 

With over 800 statues created over many years, the Moai today form Easter Island’s legacy. Once toppled, archeologists have erected many of the fallen statues throughout the island, but many still remain exactly how they were left. The Rano Raraku volcano crater was used as a quarry by the Rapa Nui inhabitants for generations and served as the birthplace for the majority of statues. A tour of the crater allows visitors see the statues in various phases of completion scattered all around, in differing shapes and sizes.

 

A tour of the Orongo Ceremonial village makes an important part of any trip to Easter Island. With stunning views of the surrounding landscape, this village was once the epicenter of the birdman cult. Young men from various clans competed in a yearly race to bring back a Sooty Tern egg from the islets found offshore. It was an important cultural invent, with the winner being proclaimed birdman of the year, thus bringing honor to his clan.

 

In addition to its rich cultural history, this volcanic island is a great place for hiking tours along its magnificent landscape. Depending on the season of your visit, scuba diving among the coral beds in nearby islets makes for a different kind of experience on the island. The crystal clear blue waters allow for visibility at a depth of 40 meters, which gives divers the opportunity to comb the ocean floor and explore the wealth of fish, algae and coral in this breathtaking region of the world.
