Gun Holsters: Choosing the Right Material for You
When purchasing a gun holster, the type of material it comes in is among the main factors you’ll need to consider. More than 15 years ago, genuine leather was the predominant option in the product line. But synthetic alternatives such as kydex and nylon have entered the picture since then, making way for a more diverse selection.
With nylon lagging behind in terms of performance, leather and kydex now share the limelight as the top material choices for western gun holsters. Which of the three is compatible with your needs? To guide you in the right direction, read on for their pros and cons.
Leather
Key advantages: Leather’s continued popularity is attributed mainly to the fact that it is fairly stiff but pliant. This means holsters in this material are sturdy enough to retain their shape even when no gun is placed. But they are can also fit the weapon snugly, with the leather stretching if the space is too tight.
Leather also has the edge in terms of visual appeal. For one, it ages gracefully under proper care and maintenance. In addition, leather holsters can be made in different colors or embossed with patterns for a decorative touch.
The horsehide versions are more dense and durable than the cowhide types. They perform better as well in terms of water resistance.
Downside: Leather is not completely water-resistant. It will tend to absorb some of the sweat from your body as time passes. The consequence? The moisture soaks into your western gun holster, producing a foul odor. There is also a chance that your weapon’s finish will be affected.
Ideal use: Given its flexibility, leather is suitable for general purposes where security, retention and style are the priorities.
Kydex
Key advantages: A high-strength acrylic and PVC thermoplastic, Kydex attracted attention primarily for its durability. Because it is much more resistant to impact and damage than leather, you won’t have to worry about accidental spills or cuts. The holsters also retain their original form even after years of use.
Another plus side? Properly fitted Kydex designs are said to allow for a faster draw. They are also often adjustable for cant, which refers to the angle of the gun in relation to your body.
Downside: The rigidity of kydex makes holsters in this material less flexible.
Ideal use: Because of the added speed they afford users, kydex holsters are popular in competitive hand gunning arenas. In addition, they are a better fit in areas where the hot and humid weather could cause leather versions to absorb moisture.
Nylon
Nylon is the least expensive of the three. While not on par with leather or kydex, it has been the most practical option for nonprofessional applications such as stage props, movie and television productions or among users who stay at home on the ranch.
