Composition Kewpie
In 1909, the Ladies Home Journal printed some of the first Kewpie doll illustrations created by Rose O’Neill. Soon after this the Kewpie doll grew to become very popular. It was 3 years afterward in Ohrdurf, Germany where the dolls were being first made from bisque. Bisque was the popular material among French and German toymakers in the mid-1800′s. So, after Rose O’Neill finished meeting with the Borgfeldt Company regarding production of the Kewpie doll, Borgfeldt’s German affiliates began creating the very first Kewpie bisque dolls.
Following the First World War, the US quit importing dolls from German manufacturers because they were simply not able to meet the demand for dolls in the US. The Americans subsequently began manufacturing the Kewpies themselves, along with Joseph Kallus’s Cameo Doll Company as among the list of front runners.
The making of the Kewpie dolls changed with the shifting of material usage. Rather than bisque, the Americans turned to different types of compounds just like vinyl and composition. It’s because bisque as a substance is quite costly and is also problematical to work with since it is fragile. A further reason is related to the emergence of a new material to make the dolls from. These reasons gave birth towards the composition Kewpie dolls that have become the most popular products offered by the Cameo Company.
Composition Kewpie dolls are made of a mixture of wood dust and glue that has been set into a mold and allowed to harden. Composition dolls received a very thick coat of flesh-toned paint to get the skin-colored texture that bisque dolls are known for. After this, the doll’s facial features, including eyebrows, eyelashes, lips, and blush on the cheeks, were painted on. Covering all the paint, there was applied a layer of varnish to protect it.
The Bisque Kewpies gave way to the composition Kewpies, as materials evolved. The composition Kewpie dolls really took off with children after this change was made. The composition dolls are better able to resist the inevitable damage from daily play. Antique Kewpie dolls will have some chipped pain or other wear and tear in its makeup because of all of the years of use. The dolls were known to break due to high temperatures and humidity; therefore the own should avoid placing the dolls in these conditions.
With the advancement of new and harder plastics in the 1940′s, doll manufacturers stopped using composition. Then hard plastic came along, and manufacturers made the switch once again.
