Civil Rights

The Rights Of The Majority?
How did things ever go this far?
Is this a case of religious intolerance, expedience or something far more
It all began with rosary beadsThese beads are often associated with catholics Rightly or wrongly, they are also worn by some as a fashion accessory.
This is a story of freedom, not just one with religious overtones
Here is what happened, just keeping to facts
A federal court ordered reinstatement of a seventh grade pupil , Raymond Hosier who was ordered suspended by a school for wearing rosary beads .
He wears the purple beads in memory of his younger brother , who died while clutching a rosary following a car accident.
The federal jjudge ordered reinstatement at a hearing regarding his civil rights
What is worrying is the reason given by the school.
District officials declined to comment because of sub judice hearings but they contend Hosier violated a policy banning clothing such rsary beads which are sometimes worn as gang symbols.
Hosiers case was taken up by the American Center for Law and Justice who contended that the suspension violated his religious freedom
This begs a more serious question
This is the essence of the problem
In this instance the fact that a gang chooses to wear a garment or symbol was cause for a school and district officials to deny the right of the law abiding public to do the same.
That must be a problem for all who treasure their freedoms
Let us hope the court upholds Hosier’s rights at the full hearing.
It is a far bigger issue than rosary beads or religious tolerance. It is about freedom and the rights of the majority. It is about not allowing a minority to destroy the rights we all expect in a democracy. How can the school and district officials have not seen the thin end of this wedge?
