The Oxford Dictionary and a focus on learning to speak english, how to speak spanish & how to speak japanese
Nothing beats the Oxford dictionary for describing the English language It is one of the most well-respected English language dictionaries in the world whereas individuals all over the planet are utilising this when they have an interest in learn to speak english.
The Oxford dictionary is over 100 years old. It began in London in 1857. The Philological society determined that current English-language dictionaries weren’t complete. They decided to completely re-examine the language. Little did they know the size of the project they had just undertaken.
The Oxford dictionary got its official start in 1879 when Oxford University Press began working on it. The New English Dictionary was the name they selected. It would contain 6400 pages in four volumes. The plan was to cover the language from 1150 AD to present. They had a ten year time line. It is a good thing that this dictionary exists as we see parallel publications depending on whether or not someone is concerned with how to speak french.
By the five year mark this precursor to the Oxford dictionary had words up to ant. It was time to adjust the schedule. Part of the reason that it was taking so long was that the English language constantly evolves. Words kept changing even as they wrote their entries, so they were constantly revising. All this had to be done when they continued to look at words from the previous seven centuries. The Enlish language is so important and as mentioned above many follow the example set by this dictionary and the context is relevant when connected to how to speak chinese.
The Oxford dictionary continued to develop over the next four decades. More people were brought in to help. Now the work had 10 volumes. It covered 400,000 words. It quickly became the ultimate authority on the English language. The initial 10 year mission was finally completed 30 years late.
It wasn’t even in people’s hands before the editors began revising the Oxford dictionary. It reached 12 volumes with a supplement in 1933. 1957 was the next major change. Between 1972 and 1986 a four volume supplement was published in parts.
In 1982 the task of bringing the Oxford dictionary into the modern world began. It was digitized. It took $13.5 million to accomplish this. It was a 5 year task. The electronic version led to a second edition published in 1989. It’s 22,000 pages over 20 volumes.
The Oxford dictionary later was published on CD-ROM, and is now available online. What an interesting journey from concept to the present.
