Chinese Luck Symbols And Objects
Having believed for many thousands of years that one can increase their luck with symbols; Chinese culture has surround its self with characters, proverbs and symbols that have been long regarded as lucky. Most of the Chinese luck symbols customarily reside in certain areas of the dwelling or place of work to amplify their fortune enhancing gifts.
It’s very normal during a Chinese New Year festival to observe the character Fu on signs. Fu, meaning luck in the Chinese language is said to bring more luck if hung upside down during the New Year’s celebration. This is the only time one is allowed to hang a Chinese character wrong side up.
To the traditional Chinese family, the dragon is the ruler of all the animals. These animals have brought good luck and fortune to Chinese family homes and workplaces for centuries. Their popularity and importance to China’s culture is very apparent by the vast number of temples and shrines built in order to pay them tribute.
Aligning the dragons natural power with water, the element they control, is believed to increase the luck a dragon will be able pass into your dwelling. China dragons are also a large part of many New Year’s celebrations. It is a common tradition to see a dragon dancing down the street, bringing good luck to the coming year.
Another traditional animal that customarily symbolizes luck and prosperity is the tortoise. It is said that all the secrets of the Earth reside within its body and patterns within its shell. A tortoise can be used inside or outside the residence however should always be placed in the North. According to the rules of Feng Shui this will bring the greatest luck to its residences.
The Qulin is also known as the Chinese unicorn. This creature has the head of a dragon, the body of a deer, the tail of an ox, the legs and hooves of a horse and the scales of a fish. Upon the dragons forehead is a single horn. The Qulin is believed to increase ones career and fertility luck.
Some plants, like the bamboo, are very important to the Chinese. This plant has a name that is very close to the Chinese word for prayer. For this reason many regarded it as very lucky. It is believed to increase the power of one’s prayer to have bamboo present. The bamboo is also admired for it perseverance during the harsh conditions of winter. It along with chrysanthemums, plum blossoms and orchids represent each of the four seasons and is commonly referred to as the one of the Four Noble Ones.
