Chinese Dwarf Hamsters – A Brief History
Syrian hamsters had been the pet of choice for hamster enthusiasts throughout the late 20th century. However, had it not been for the rise of communism in China, the Chinese dwarf hamster might have had this role.
Chinese Dwarf hamsters had been used in medical research since 1919. There was a vibrant supply chain originating in China because scientists could not get the animals to reproduce in captivity. Chinese dwarf hamsters were used to study diphtheria, tuberculosis, pneumonia, leishmaniasis, rabies, influenza, monilia, and drug safety. Once Chairman Mao took over leadership of China, however, it was no longer possible to export hamsters out of that country.
As a result, Syrian hamsters gained a prominent role in medical research.
Chinese dwarf hamsters are gentle creatures, agile, and easy to train. They were the stars of hamster circuses, which could be seen on the streets of Peking, China in the late 19th century. Today, these animals are popular pets in the United Kingdom and are gaining in popularity in the United States.
The animals are smaller than Syrian hamsters but larger than the dwarf hamsters. They have a prehensile tail and feet that are adept at grasping. Therefore, Chinese dwarf hamsters are quite good climbers compared to other hamsters kept as pets.
Their bodies are long and thin, and they have a narrow face with a pointed nose. This makes them appear very mouse-like. In fact, the first time that you see one, you may believe that you are not looking at a hamster at all!
The next time that someone tells you about this “new” hamster species that is for sale, remember to tell that person that he or she only has half the story. Pass along the information that, except for the intervention of history, the Chinese dwarf hamster might have been the commonest of all hamster species.
