Famous festivals in India:
Losar- it is Tibetan New Year celebrated in various parts of India. On this lovely occasion, Buddhist visits temples to offer their worship, and to their relatives to wish them greetings. Chaam Dance, portraying victory of good over evil, is of great significance in this festival.
Ullambana- During this festival, it is believed that the Gate of Hell is open and the dead are allowed to visit their loved ones on earth. Offerings are made to the dead and charitable deeds are performed to gain spiritual merit. Apart from India, it is celebrated in china, Japan and Malaysia. Buddha Purnima- it is celebrates the birth of Lord Buddha in the month of April/May on a full moon night. On the same day, he attained parinibbana, thus also known as death anniversary.
Asalha Day- it is celebrated to memorize the first teaching of Lord Buddha to a group of five friends. During its celebration, the monks remain confined to their monasteries and concentrate on their meditation. India Buddhist Monasteries and Buddhist temples are worth sight during the festivals.
Hemis Fair- it is celebrated in the Hemis monastery in Ladkah and J&K, to commemorate the birth of Indian sage, Guru Padmasambhava, responsible for spreading Buddhism in Tibet. Dadmokarpo or Rygyalsras Rimpoche is the portrait to which the pilgrims worship. Mask dance, beating of drums, clashing of cymbals and the spiritual wail of pipes add a mystic touch to the festival.
