Ceiling Improvements – Suspended Systems
Installing a suspended ceiling as part of a basement remodel is a popular decorating choice. A suspended ceiling is also a fantastic choice when your ceiling is less than perfect. If you are planning to upgrade your ceiling on your own, selecting a suspended ceiling is smart. In fact, many homeowners can easily install a suspended ceiling in their house as a weekend home improvement project.
Picking the Ceiling System
There are a variety of suspended ceiling types to choose from, as well as an array of styles and patterns of ceiling panels. You can also find a suspended ceiling system to fit every budget and handiwork level. Ultimately, you need to consider your budget to make sure that you leave enough money for finishing decor like unique wall clock or unique metal wall plaques, as well as the visual effect you are trying to create in the room. Measure your room prior to buying a suspended ceiling system. Then you will also want to decide how you want to configure your ceiling tiles. By dividing the area of the whole ceiling by the area of one of the tiles, you can figure out how many ceiling panels you will need. This will tell you the number of full ceiling panels you need have on hand. Figure out how many times a single tile divides into the length and width measurements, and divide that in half to determine the number of partial tiles that are necessary. It is probably a fine idea to purchase at least a few extra panels to be sure that you do not run out.
Nailing Down the Perimeter Molding
Start by measuring the top edges of the walls for the ceiling system. Make sure to account for at least six inches as you measure if you are also putting in fluorescent lighting fixtures in your ceiling. If you are not going to install lighting fixtures in your ceiling, then you can reduce the amount of space required to four inches, but you will not want your measurement to get any smaller than that. It is important to leave enough clearance between the perimeter molding and the ceiling to have room to maneuver your ceiling panels properly into place. Use a level to install the perimeter molding in the room.
Secondary Tees and Main Beams
Next, you will be installing the main beams. To keep yourself straight, snap a chalk line for reference every four feet across the entire room. Next put in the hanger wire screws at four foot intervals on the chalk line. After the screw hangers are in, connect the wire from hanger to hanger. As you put up the wire, make sure that it is stretched tightly between the screw hangers. This single wire joins all of the main tees. Using a level to keep the main tees uniform, you can now add them. After installing the main tees you can glide the cross tees into place. Keep checking with your level to ensure that the ceiling is staying straight.
Adding the Panels
Once all the tees and cross tees are suspended, you simply need to put the ceiling panels in place, use some metal wall art, and install your fluorescent lighting panels if desired.
