Love Is In The Air
There is something about the Caribbean that creates an ideal romantic vacation. Whether it’s the tropical environment, white sands, blue waters and swaying palms, it seems to bring out the romance in a large amount people. Finding the appropriate lodge in paradise is a close second to setting in creating that ideal getaway. There are plenty of Playa del Carmen hotels to pick from, but when you are thinking about romance, the list is narrowed.
Our first criteria when choosing a romantic hotel is size. Yes, in this case, size matters, and at least for our preference, the smaller hotels get the nod. However, there are still a wide assortment of preferences and a a small number of things to keep in mind. Smaller might indicate a cabana on the beach with no facilities to speak of and perhaps not even electricity 24 hours a day. That style of romance may be for some, but for our notion of romance, we’ll require a few added amenities and essential conveniences.
Site is a further decisive factor, beach front, central or off the beaten path. All of those options present benefits depending on what you are after. Beachfront is of course always beautiful with access to the beach and Caribbean right past your front door. Being central, if the beach is near, is also a nice option for dining and shopping and a haven from the sand and wind; it might also suggest having several items a beach front option is lacking, like a pool. A lot of beachfront properties in Playa del Carmen do not have pools!
The décor and on-site services are also a important consideration. When you step into your room, it’s nice to have a air of ease and ambiance. A nice king size bed and cozy linens with a spacious bathroom are important pluses. A sitting area with a couch and table is also a good touch, a TV and phone is also convenient but certainly not a deal breaker if romancing is in the air. On-site spa services or at least close by selections are a necessity if you are seeking to spoil that special someone.
With these key elements in mind our list of hotels is now beginning to come into focus. The top four quaint hotels on our list for a romantic getaway in Playa del Carmen are Mosquito Blue, Playa Palms, Mahekal Beach Resort and Mosquito Beach Hotel. All of the above stated hotels have a mixture of most if not all of the features that make for a fantastic romantic getaway.
Mosquito Blue features a central setting with a wonderful restaurant, spa services and two pools. Mosquito Beach is a fashionable hotel right on the beach with a delectable restaurant and private beach club. Playa Palms is a beachfront haven with a river like pool with in-room iPod docs and flat panel TV’s. At Mahekal Beach resort, you won’t find phones or TV’s but you are able to get internet access in a couple of locations on the property, and with two pools, this is a very unique cabana style resort on one of the best beaches in Playa del Carmen.
For our romantic weekend, we chose Mosquito Blue. Mosquito Blue is very centrally based at the corner of 12th and 5th Avenue right off the walking mall. A lovely choice with Mediterranean flavored rooms offering ample space and bedding with a few romantic touches like the 4 post bed. The service was amazing and the staff was very accommodating and really catered to our every need. The small “Zen Spa” on location at the hotel was a restful and soothing opportunity for a range of services. The dining was fantastic international cuisine and as visitors, we also got a 30% discount! The other reward was the complimentary breakfast included at the sister hotel Mosquito Beach, a full gourmet breakfast menu that also came with full entrance to the private beach club. Mosquito Beach is simply a short amble along the mall from Mosquito Blue.
Keep in mind that these romantic Caribbean weekends are able to lead to things like a Playa del Carmen wedding, so be prepared to be swept off your feet if you dare to select one of these wonderful romantic hotel getaways.
