Organizational Tips For Teachers

Teachers have so many things to keep track of each day that anytime a helpful tool or tip for staying organized can be found, it gives the teacher something to smile about. In this article, we will take a look at some of the best organizational tips to help teachers eliminate unnecessary stress and control valuable time.

One of the most used areas in a classroom is that of the teacher’s desk. In the business of the day, this area can quickly and easily become piled with papers and small items such as paper clips or pens. Because a teacher has many important items, it is necessary for the desk area to be maintained in a very organized manner.

The first tip for keeping a desk area clean is to be selective about what you place in this area. If there is an item or items on the desk that are not utilized three or more times per week, then they should be moved to a different area of the classroom. Small plastic bins are a great way to create more space for items that are used infrequently but still need to be easily accessible.

Important papers should be kept in the drawers of the teacher’s desk, not on top. On the top of the desk, a teacher can place stackable trays in which students can place completed assignments (but an even better place is on a counter or table near the desk); but important papers such as graded work, anything confidential or communication between teacher and parent needs to be out of sight in a safe place where it cannot get lost in a shuffle of other papers.

In the drawers of the teacher’s desk, there can be a file for each student in which necessary papers are kept. The student file can contain copies of communication sent to parents, IEP paperwork or notes from parent/teacher meetings. Important student work can also be safely kept in such files. Also in the desk drawers, a teacher can create a file for field trips in which money and permission slips are kept. When money is kept in the teacher’s desk, it should be kept in a drawer that locks.

Keys are a necessary part of a teacher’s daily routine. Every time the classroom is left, it is necessary to lock doors for safety purposes. For this reason, it is common for teachers to wear lanyards during working hours. Lanyards are handy tools that can help any individual keep better track of items such as keys or ID cards.
