When An Artist Wants To Handle Dogs
This female painter got her first dog when she was eight years old. It died within the year but the small Boston terrier was able to leave a lasting impression on the girl. There is a special place in her heart when it comes to noble pets. One accomplished painter is what she is and she specializes in dog portraits. Many Sunday afternoons have been spent by her in the public library where she goes through every dog book and magazine she could find. It was before her art career when she hoped to become a professional dog handler showing dogs in trials and dog shows. When she was 13, all her free time was spent in dog shows where she drew and sketched the animals. What a friend encouraged her to do at 16 was not only make portraits of dogs but also painting with oils.
She has specialized by choice she’s quite capable of painting other subjects and has to her credit a number of landscapes, sea scapes and abstracts. She felt that her decision was a right one for early on in her career she had made and sold a number of dog portraits. At first, most of the portraits she made were of the dogs owned by members of the family. Displayed by a local pet shop was a picture she did of their own Boston terrier after they put up a notice about her paintings.
Two paintings are what she credits for a large measure of her progress. There was a fascinating little mongrel the animal humane association restored to health and adopted as a mascot called charlie black and her first painting was of him. What makes a dog considering a Labrador retriever are the head as well as the expression. When it comes to a black dog, not only is hard to photograph one but painting it is even harder. There was a painting she made of the statue of a jacket found in Tutankhamen’s tomb which was unusual. She did paint Egyptian symbols in the background.
She also paints other kinds of pets when requested, like horses for example. Both tangible and psychological is the help her husband gives. For her he made a specially designed table that holds her paints and brushes. Whenever she shows her work, she uses the specially crafted easels and display stands she made and stained herself. She was able to make a three by four foot portrait of a Labrador which is her biggest portrait yet.
Compared with the longer coated ones, smoother dogs are easier to paint. There are no dogs which are posed. It is impossible for the dogs to hold their heads just right. In observing the animal, she takes an entire hour and this is so that she is able to remember its sheen, the color of its coat, its typical stance, and the evident personality or character traits it may have. Considering these characteristics being recorded onto a canvas, many people agree that she is talented.
She makes use of snapshots given by the owners. If none is available she takes a picture herself and blows it up on the screen. With the background and all, she lets the people she paints for decide. Some people like it plain and others prefer to have sceneries. Because of her family commitments she is able to do only one portrait a month. I like to take a little vacation now and then catch up with my housework.
