How To Have A Great Holiday In South Africa Staying In Self-catering Accommodation
A self-catering holiday in South Africa is a lot of fun. When the Northern hemisphere is shivering under a blanket of snow, South African holidaymakers are busy tanning on white sandy beaches. South Africa is also an extremely affordable tourist destination and maybe the only one where you can get first world conveniences at prices more comparable to that of third world countries.
Self-catering holidays are very enjoyable and affordable options when you visit South Africa. The country has numerous top quality resorts where there’s fully fitted chalets for rent a prices that you will never find in the Western World. Our family recently rented chalet near the resort town of Hermanus in the Southern Cape which even had the latest model delonghi oven in the modern kitchen!
There’s a couple of car hire firms at Cape Town International Airport. The vast majority of them require credit card before you can rent a car. Make sure to check the car in the presence of the company representative before driving off – you don’t want to end up paying for somebody else’s scratches and dents.
If you should by any chance be traveling with your baby, try to reserve a car that’s fitted with a britax car seat. This will not only provide he baby with a comfortable trip, but could well save his life in an emergency. The few South African rands it will cost extra is well worth it.
Afterward head East along the N2 towards the beach towns of Strand and Gordon’s Bay. Just after Gordon’s Bay the road crawls up the scenic Sir Lowry’s Pass. At the top of the pass is a lookout point from where you’ll have a breathtaking view of Gordons Bay and the Stand right below you and False Bay and the mountains of the Peninsula in the distance. Once you go down the other side of the mountain, you move into apple and corn country. Near the town of Grabouw are several export apple farms.
A hundred kilometers from Cape Town you will enter the lovely seaside resort of Hermanus. Here you can find numerous self-catering resorts. Settle in and start to explore the beautiful surroundings. There are many restaurants overlooking the ocean near the town square. There’s also a flea market where you can buy clothing and artifacts made by local artists. You will also run into hawkers walking around offering watches for sale. I once bought a men’s sport watch from one of the that lasted exactly three days!
All in all you will have a wonderful time in the Hermanus area. The scenery is magnificent, the people are friendly and there are numerous restaurants where you can eat local and international dishes. You can also go on boat trips and visit the small towns in the area.
